We are visiting Doha, this time it will just be us two. A little break we really welcome! But I must say having been to Doha, I’d love to come back and bring the kids, there is a lot to do for them!
This will be a 4 days in Doha itinerary for couples (or anyone who is visiting really) covering all the must-see attractions, romantic experiences, desert safaris, food spots, and travel tips for first-timers.
We left on Sunday evening for a night flight to Doha, a 6h20m flight. We departed at 21.25 which, with the time difference, brings us to Doha at 6.15 in the morning. Everything went really smooth and after collecting our suitcases we headed to our hotel for the stay.
We used Uber or Karwa throughout our stay in Doha to get us to places, taxi’s are really affordable.
We chose the Mandarin Oriental. They currently (October 2025) still have a deal where the third night is complementary (if you become part of the ‘Fans of M.O., which is free). We also had our breakfast included.
The hotel is stunning and the service is impeccable. Throughout our visit we kept finding these kind gestures in our room, each time we’d come back from a trip. A couple of examples are filled dates and chocolates left on the table, our shoes neatly put in a line on a new matt, bookmarks on all our books and lovely slippers.
The hotel is in Msheireb, an amazing neighbourhood with lots of nice coffee places, giving the area a really modern feel. It’s also walking distance to the Souq Waqif, Gold Souq, Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche (obviously walking depending on the time of year you visit). We went early October and it was hot, I can only imagine what it will be like in summer and I know I would definitely not be walking much.
We are staying 4 days and 3 nights in Doha. We fly back home on Friday morning at 1.25 so have the whole Thursday to still do things, but rather than another night we will be sleeping on the plane.
Doha was a pleasant surprise to me, I didn’t know what to expect but I loved it.
Before going to Doha I researched what would be appropriate and respectful to wear and with this is mind I decided to always wear long trousers or skirts that came far below my knees, as well as tops that always covered my shoulder and had half long or long sleeves.
We did all the things we intended to do and I will share our itinerary with you to help you plan your visit. If you are in doubt whether to go or not, I would definitely recommend going. Personally I would not go during summer time as it will be so warm it might prevent you from doing some really nice things.

Day 1: Mina District, The Souq Waqif, Gold Souq
After a night flight from London Heathrow to Doha, we land around 6.15. We smoothly get through passport control (no Visa needed for either of us, Dutch and UK passport), and wait for our suitcases to arrive (this delayed us and had us frightened our suitcases were lost as I made us wait at the wrong baggage reclaim belt). After finding our suitcases we quickly hop into a taxi and within 20 minutes we arrive at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Msheireb, Doha. It really is the perfect hotel for a romantic getaway with your partner.
Wander Through Mina District – a glimpse of local life and colorful streets
We chose to check in early – and pay a little extra – with the agreement that we can also check out late on Thursday. When getting to our room we find three complementary filled dates on our table, very lovely. We use the early morning to sleep as sleeping on the plane is just not that comfortable when you travel economy. After a nap and a quick fresh up and change of clothes we head to our first visit. We will be visiting Mina District, to see the beautiful pastel buildings, visit the most beautiful fish market I have ever been to and have a fresh seafood lunch at Chabrat al Mina.
We first headed for the fish market. When we were there, around 14:00, it was not busy at all and a lot of the fish had gone. If you want to have to most wide selection of fish it’s recommended to go around 11:00. The market is busiest in the mornings from Thursday through Sunday and on Friday evenings.
The Chabrat al Mina fish market is located at the Old Doha Port and features a wide selection of local and imported fish. After purchasing you can have your fish prepared at Chabrat al Mina restaurant. We didn’t purchase our fish directly at the fish market, but we did select it from the fresh fish counter in the restaurant. When selecting your fish or seafood you can decide how you like it prepared (grilled, stir fried or deep fried) and what sauce or herbs you’d like to go with it.
Upon sitting down we receive complementary bread, dips and a salad.
We ordered two starters to share, the crab cake croquettes and deep fried baby squid, a fresh fish each and fried rice with eggs and shrimp to share.
My partner had a red snapper and I had a local fish I unfortunately don’t remember the name of.
I would 100% recommend eating here. The food is super fresh, the staff are very welcoming and helpful and the total meal was very good value for money. They do not add service charges to the bills in Doha, so we always made sure to add it ourselves.
After our lunch we had a walk around the beautiful pastel buildings in Mina District, some have stunning street art. There are plenty of restaurants and small shops to visit, the whole area to us had a very serene and calming vibe. If yuu are looking for picturesque things to do in Doha with your partner, you need to visit Mina District. We spent a couple hours wandering round, going exploring shops and eating the most delicious mango ice-cream.
Discover Souq Waqif – spices, handicrafts, and vibrant Qatari culture
After Mina District we headed back to the hotel to freshen up for the evening. Upon arrival we found some new filled dates. We changed into our evening wear to head to the Souq Waqif for a stroll and to ‘quickly’ have a look at the Gold Souq.
As we had quite a late and large lunch neither of us were hungry. We decided to walk to the Souq Waqif from our hotel, which is a 10 minute walk. It was very warm, so when we entered the Souq we were pleasantly surprised with an outside air conditioned walk!
Shine at the Gold Souq – treasure hunting among dazzling jewelry and souvenirs
We had a little stroll through the Souq, each had a fresh juice and then headed for the gold souq. Not intending to spend there long, in the end it took up most of our evening as my partner found some amazing jewellery he needed to make decisions about and agree the price being paid. We went to SHINE gold & diamonds for this and were assisted by one of their friendly employees. My partner bought two rings and a bracelet and the rings each needed to be adjusted, so whilst this was being done we headed back into the souq for a quick bite. We ended up at Sama Beirut for a chicken and lamb wrap and some chips. We took this as a take away and ate it outside in one of the squares after picking up the finished jewellery.
I am really bad at bargaining, it makes me so incredibly uncomfortable, but my partner is comfortable doing so and is good at it. I think it would be more weird not to when buying gold, but as I really am not an expert I can’t really advice on what to do. All I can say is my partner definitely didn’t pay the first, second or third offered price for his jewellery…
We headed back to the hotel, tired and very happy. As our previous night was pretty broken we were looking forward to a good night sleep in our massive bed. We did set the alarm for 10:30, as breakfast in the hotel is served from 6.30 till 11:00 and we did not want to miss out on it.
Day 2: Villaggio Mall, Supermarkets, The Souq Waqif
We got woken by the alarm, so it was a good thing we set it. We quickly went for breakfast and were met by the most delicious breakfast options.
There was bread, local dips such as hummus, baba ghanoush and tahini, dumplings, cheeses, smoked fish, English breakfast, fresh fruit, granola and a chef to prepare your eggs as you wish, amongst other things. It was delicious. I always like having breakfast included, especially when staying at a nice hotel. You do not have to rush getting ready in the morning or leave the hotel hangry. I also just LOVE breakfast really.
Start Your Day at Villaggio Mall – luxury shopping and Venetian-style canals
After breakfast we got ready to go to Villaggio Mall. As for every trip during our holiday we ordered a cab via either Uber or Karwa. Karwa was always slightly cheaper than Uber, but often took longer to get there. So we mostly used Uber. The mall is Italian inspired and has a 150m long water stream with gondolas. The ceiling is also made so that it looks like you’re outside under a cloudy sky.
Neither of us really planned to buy much, or anything at all, but we both got back with some new clothes. All of which we could’ve bought in the UK but the experience in this beautiful mall helped us to spend the money I think..
There is a large food court which, we found, mainly offers fried chicken and burgers, there really isn’t much else to get. We had lunch here, but it definitely was my least favourite food we ate in Doha during our trip, it was more a necessity.
My partner has an obsession with going to the supermarket when we are abroad, so obviously we had to plan at least one visit. Inside Villaggio Mall is Carrefour, where we had a browse and bought some bits.
Evening Stroll at Souq Waqif and dinner at Parisa – spices, souvenirs, and authentic Qatari vibes and food
After Villaggio Mall we headed back to our hotel to get ready for the evening. We have booked dinner at Parisa, which is within the Souq Waqif. Like the previous evening we walked from our hotel. We left a little earlier to have a quick stroll through the Souq. We visited some jewellery shops and my partner tried on some vintage watches. I bought a pashmina scarf in a lovely pastel orange tint.
We booked dinner at Parisa for 20:30. The interior is amazing and for us the food definitely matched it. We ordered two starters, one cold and one hot, and two mains. There was a lot of food!!
The meat was so incredibly tender, it just fell of the bone as soon as you touched it. We sat in a really lovely boot and could oversee the whole restaurant. The interior is beautiful and in my opinion, worth visiting. Also nice to know that there is not just tourists inside (as the restaurant is well known) it’s also frequently visited by locals.

After dinner we decided to have a little stroll through the Souq to walk off the food and then sit down for a shisha. We went to Asherg and had a mixed berry shisha. I recommend just sitting down watching the people walk by and enjoying the evening. The atmosphere in the Souq is lovely and I loved experiencing the mixed vibe of locals and tourists.
After shisha we walked back to our hotel and enjoyed our second night in our beautiful room and enormous bed, already looking forward to breakfast the next morning.
Day 3: Vendome Mall, Gold Souq, Desert Safari, The Pearl
We start our day with the lovely breakfast at Mandarin Oriental. I say it again, if you are booking this hotel – I recommend – I would definitely include the breakfast, it doesn’t disappoint.
After breakfast we had a look at the outside and pool area of the hotel. We did not use it as our itinerary was too busy, but it looked amazing and relaxing.
Shop & Stroll at Vendome Mall – high-end shopping and café stops
This morning we are making a quick visit to Vendôme Mall. It wasn’t originally my plan to visit another mall, but my partner really wanted to see it as the architecture is supposed to be incredible. It was a short visit, just to have a look around, but I am glad we went.
We didn’t buy anything and literally just had a stroll and went back again.
Food at Turkey Central – cheap and cheerful
From the mall we went to Turkey Central to pick up some lunch. We got it as a recommendation from someone who said it is cheap and cheerful, but nothing special inside. And I think that sums it up. We went for a take away of two wraps, one chicken and one lamb. Personally I found that there was too much sauce in the chicken wrap, but that might also be because I am not too big on garlic sauce.
Thrill of a Desert Safari – quad bike ride, dune bashing, inland sea and sunset magic
We got back to the hotel to eat at around 14.40, so we were in a little bit of a rush to get changed and eat before our ride for the desert safari would arrive. We booked a private tour, because I found a relatively cheap one via Tour HQ. I received various quotes and after chatting with various companies decided to go with Skyline Dunes. We were picked up in a white 4×4 and our first stop was at the beginning of the desert where we could ride a quad or buggy into the desert. We chose the buggy as when you chose the quad bike you can only ride in a marked designated area. With the buggy you go into the desert (with a guide). We had to pay additional for this as it wasn’t included in the tour price.
The guide was excellent at taking pictures. We have many nice ones of us two with the amazing sunset in the background.
After the buggy ride, we did 30 minutes, we got back into the 4×4 to drive into the desert for dune bashing and to catch the sunset. I was just able to take a picture when we got on top of the dune before the sun was completely gone.
We did dune bashing, drove to the inland sea (which was so warm!) and ended by the camel station. You can ride a camel here (you will need cash) but it was not included in our tour. We’ve both done it before and therefore decided not to do it again. But it’s very cheap to do it, so if you haven’t it could definitely be a highlight!
Romantic Evening at The Pearl-Qatar – waterfront dining and luxury vibes
We started our drive back to Doha at around 18:10, after the car had air put back into the tires again, and got back to our hotel around 19:00. We are going to the Pearl tonight so had a quick shower and change of clothes before we hopped into a taxi again for the last outing of the day.
The Pearl is known to be relatively expensive, but we decided we did not want to spend a fortune on food so made it our mission to find an affordable, yet delicious place to eat. And we found it! We went to Ginger Club. We sat outside, next to a canal where little boats with people on keep passing. It was relatively quiet and the area honestly had such a staged feel, we both felt a bit like we were in the Truman Show. Beautiful buildings though, but it just didn’t feel real.
We both love asian food and the food honestly was good (we went twice!) great flavours and spices! We both love spicy food, and this food was spicy! Unlike in the UK where it says the food is spicy, this was actually spicy! I would really recommend going here if you don’t want to spend a fortune but want to have great food. Also the setting outside on the canal was great and there was an outside wind machine to keep cool.
After dinner we took a 20 mins walk to see the Crystal Walk at Gewan Island. We crossed a bridge with a great view to enter the outside airconditioned Crystal Walk. A stunning area, full of nice little coffee places and shops.
Our last stop of the night was Port Arabia. We took a short taxi ride here to have a walk around the port and take in the views. We ended our night in the Starbucks so we could connect to their WiFi to get our final taxi to the hotel. A very full and busy day, but we loved everything about it.
Tomorrow is our last day and tonight is our final sleep in the hotel so we are enjoying it one last night!
Day 4: Museum of Islamic Art, The Corniche, Katara Cultural Village, Mondrian Hotel
This morning we are going for our final breakfast in the hotel, I am going to miss this. We have a late check-out today (14:30) and our flight will be another night flight and only leave at 1.25 at night. So we really still have a full day in Doha and can shower at the hotel before heading to the airport, to freshen up for the plane.
After breakfast my partner wanted to have one last look at the Gold Souq, as there was a ring he was still considering buying. He also wanted to visit one final supermarket. I wasn’t feeling this so decided to spend the last morning staying at the hotel, quickly packing and then relaxing in our room. Some time to myself!
Morning at the Museum of Islamic Art – stunning architecture and world-class exhibits
At 14:30 we checked out and left our suitcases at the hotel. We took a taxi to the Museum of Islamic Art, what an incredible building!
We saw various collections and masterpieces from across the globe showing the diversity of Islamic heritage. My personal highlight was the incredibly beautiful jewellery displayed. I took so many pictures but will display a couple of my favourites.
Sunset Dhow Boat adventure– scenic views, stunning sunsey and photo opportunities
We left the museum at 16.40 to get to the meeting point for our Dhow boat, which was at the bottom of the Museum of Islamic Art. The boat ride takes an hour and will capture the sunset.
We booked it via Get Your Guide with Golden Adventures Doha. Sadiq was our guide and he was amazing. Super helpful, kind and an excellent photographer! The tour came with water and pretty lively music. It was a group tour so we shared the boat with many others.
Discover Katara Cultural Village – art, culture, and local events
We got off the Dhow Boat at 18:00 and took a taxi to Katara Cultural Village. It’s perfect for a stroll, very photogenic and good for attending cultural events. You can also shop (21 High Street), go to any of the many cafe’s and restaurants and visit the beautiful mosque. It was designed to resemble a traditional Qatari village. I am (probably one of the very few) people who likes pigeons, so seeing pigeon towers, which provide a home for thousands of pigeons and collect their droppings for fertilizing, was a highlight! They’re absolutely stunning too.
Stay in Style at Mondrian Hotel – amazing interior offering the best pictures
When we were booking this trip I actually wanted to stay in a different hotel. One of my favourite Dutch designers is Marcel Wanders, who set up Moooi, and he designed the Mondrian Hotel in Doha. From the pictures alone it looks incredible. My partner however didn’t really like the look of the rooms, so in the end we compromised for the Mandarin Oriental.
But we did visit the Mondrian and one of the staff gave us a tour. Unfortunately we weren’t able to see one of the rooms, but he did show us the pool area (we didn’t take pictures as families with kids were making use of it), ground floor and the most beautiful toilet I have ever been to! The hotel is incredibly stunning and the interior really is next level. But I also have to admit for a stay I actually was happy we did stay at the Mandarin Oriental. It felt a little more personable and the location is much better in my opinion. Mandarin Oriental is in Msheireb on a quiet road, whereas the Mondrian is in the West Bay on a very busy road. But I will show you some of the stunning interior.
After visiting the Mondrian we quickly took a taxi to Ginger Club to have one quick final meal. I ordered the sesame chili chicken with Korean rice and my partner had the five spice prawn with burnt garlic rice. As good as the night before, would recommend!
After dinner we headed back to the hotel to have a quick shower and get changed for our night flight home. We got to the airport with enough time to have a little stroll and buy some last minute Doha chocolate to thank opa en oma for staying with our kids.
Our flight leaves at 1.25 and we landed in London at 6.15. We got back home on time to spend a whole day with our lovely boys. It was really lovely to have a holiday for just us two, but we were happy to be back with them <3. The next one will be a family one again!
I loved Doha, would definitely come back here and would certainly recommend visiting. So much to see and do and it’s a beautiful city architecture wise.

What is the best time of year to visit Doha?
Based on our experience, the best time to visit Doha is between November and March, when temperatures are cooler and ideal for sightseeing. We visited Doha in early October, and while it was definitely hot during the day, it was still very manageable. We planned outdoor activities like walking around Souq Waqif and The Corniche in the mornings and evenings, and spent the hottest hours indoors at malls, museums, and cafés.
Is 4 days enough in Doha?
Yes — 4 days in Doha felt like the perfect amount of time for us, even visiting in early October. It allowed us to experience a great balance of culture, shopping, food, luxury, and adventure without feeling rushed. We could explore traditional markets, visit iconic landmarks like the Museum of Islamic Art, enjoy relaxed evenings, and still fit in a desert safari, all at a comfortable pace for a couple.
Is Doha expensive for couples?
In our experience, Doha can be as luxurious or as affordable as you want it to be. While there are plenty of high-end hotels, restaurants, and shopping options, we found many experiences to be free or budget-friendly. Walking around Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, and The Corniche cost nothing, which helped balance out more expensive experiences like hotels or tours—making Doha a great destination for couples with different budgets.
